To the author...my undying thanks for the most full and literate discussion of this song I've ever seen. "Every Little Thing" has always occupied a special place in my heart. As you note, the song is deceptively simple and somewhat overshadowed by its surroundings. But it has always spoken to me in quite an emotional way.
I agree that all evidence points to this being Paul's song, and yet it is so redolent of John...not only because his vocal dominates, but just because it has the "feel" of him. I'm so grateful, too, that you have confirmed what I have always argued...that it's John playing the Rickenbacker 12-string here. Your reasoning is the same as mine...the tone of the instrument here is unlike what is heard on any other Beatles song featuring the 12-string, and the style of playing reflects John's earthier approach.
I stumbled upon this site by accident just now, and this was the first song I looked up. Based on your thorough and intelligent treatment of "Every Little Thing," I can't wait to visit some of my other favorites. Again, I can't thank you enough!
