I've always felt that "Tell Me Why" would have been incedible song if The Beatles had performed it live, and spent years looking for some obscure bootleg which I hoped existed. Well obviously at this point I've given up on that, but do want to point out that the version of this song used in the movie indeed appears to have elements which are live besideds the audience. I say that because one day when watching the film I noticed that the opening lines of Johns solo vocal ("well I gave her everything I had") had an openess and separation which suggested that he was actually sing onstage but yes that everything else was mimed or canned from the album. It reminded me like the live versions of "Hey Jude" and "Revolution", wherein for sure the Beatles played with themselves as it were. Upon listen closely I came to believe thi was just the cases, but was stymied about proving it because the performence was so spot on with the album take. Well after reading this blog I am now convinced BECAUSE of something pointed out above. This being that this line in the movie IS NOT double tracked! So yeah it seems we indeed have a version on at least Lennon belting out his lines live before an audience. Listen carefully and I think you will perhaps agree.

I think it's the mix. If you listen to the mono mix, John is only double tracked for a little of the mid 8 but nowhere else. This actually makes the song less untidy and doesn't detract from the lennon vocaL at all. Also, I think the drums may have had some revrb to make them sound more'live' in the stereo version, which isn't there on the mono. Worth listening to both as a comparrison.

I've listened to all the versions of "Tell Me Why" and Lennon sounds live in the movie.I for sure detect a different vocal inflection from the studio version as to the word "on" in the line "if you don't I really can't go on"...
